AI Search Visibility for Industrial Companies: Your Buyers Are Asking ChatGPT. Are You in the Answer?

Most B2B deals are decided before a salesperson ever gets a call. According to 6sense’s 2025 Buyer Experience Report, about 95% of winning vendors come from the buyer’s day-one shortlist, and first contact doesn’t happen until roughly 61% of the way through the journey. Bain adds that 85% of B2B buyers purchase from their original day-one vendor list.

Here’s the shift that matters: those day-one lists are increasingly built inside AI answers, not on a page of blue links. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews don’t name you when a buyer asks who serves your category, you may never know the deal existed. That’s the AI search visibility gap, and for industrial companies, it’s still wide open.

Google search no longer reliably sends traffic to websites. The 2024 SparkToro/Datos zero-click study found only about 374 of every 1,000 US searches click through to the open web; on mobile the zero-click rate reaches 77.2%. Bain reported in February 2025 that 80% of consumers rely on AI summaries for at least 40% of their searches, contributing to 15–25% declines in organic traffic.

The click-through data is just as stark. Pew Research found that when a Google AI Overview appears, users click a result link only 8% of the time, versus 15% without one. Ahrefs measured position-one CTR falling 58% with an AI Overview present.

But being cited flips the math

Zero-click doesn’t mean zero opportunity. It means the opportunity moved. Seer Interactive found that brands cited inside an AI Overview earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands that aren’t cited. TrustRadius’s April 2025 study of over 2,000 B2B buyers found 72% had encountered AI Overviews in research, and 90% of them clicked through to a cited source.

The traffic that does arrive is growing fast: SE Ranking found AI referral traffic grew 16x year over year, with ChatGPT accounting for roughly 75–80% of it.

The pattern is simple: buyers get answers without clicking, except when your brand is the answer. Then they click more.

The industrial gap nobody’s talking about

Here’s the honest truth: every published study on AI search behavior skews toward software and tech buyers. Nobody has solid data yet on how many plant engineers prompt ChatGPT for vendor research. Anyone who quotes you a precise number is inventing it.

What we do have is practitioner evidence. Industrial marketing firm Marketing Metrics Corp reports engineers already use AI tools for vendor research, with a winner-takes-most dynamic forming in industrial categories. And the mechanics of industrial buying (long sales cycles, committees of eight or more, RFQ-driven purchases) mean SaaS-shaped playbooks don’t translate. When a buyer shortlists three vendors in January and issues the RFQ in September, being on the AI-built day-one list matters even more.

There’s also good news. The KDD 2024 study on generative engine optimization (GEO), the formal name for optimizing content for AI answers, found adding citations, statistics, and quotations improved visibility in AI responses by up to 40%, with the largest gains for lower-ranked sites. Sites ranking fifth saw visibility jump 115% when they added citations. Niche players benefit disproportionately, so industrial firms that move first have an outsized opening.

What actually gets you cited

Start with Google itself: per Google Search Central’s documentation on AI features, there are no special technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews: standard search eligibility and snippet controls apply. Google’s guidance recommends what good SEO has always rewarded: people-first content, structured data, and clear answers to real questions.

On top of that foundation, the KDD 2024 research points to three concrete moves:

  1. Add real statistics. AI systems preferentially cite content with verifiable numbers.
  2. Cite credible sources. Content that references authoritative sources gets cited more itself.
  3. Include expert quotations. Named expertise is highly quotable, for AI and for humans.

Then there’s what we call the dual-reader rule, where industrial companies have a genuine edge: write so an AI can lift a clean, accurate answer and an engineer won’t find a single error. Spec-level accuracy on the technical details, plain-language summaries for the budget holder. Content that satisfies both is what AI systems are built to surface, because it’s what buyers trust.

One honest caveat: outside the KDD 2024 findings, no rigorous studies yet prove individual GEO tactics like FAQ schema. Treat this playbook as best practice, not a guaranteed lever.

How do I measure AI search visibility when there’s no ranking report?

There’s no Search Console for ChatGPT. Measurement means combining three approaches:

  1. Track AI referral traffic by platform. Segment visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com.
  2. Run prompt audits. Monthly, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your buyers actually ask and record who’s named.
  3. Mind the dark funnel. A buyer can ask AI about your category, see your name, and pick up the phone. Ask new inquiries how they found you.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search visibility for B2B? It’s whether your brand appears in AI-generated answers when buyers research your category. With only about 374 of every 1,000 US searches clicking to the open web (SparkToro/Datos 2024), being in the answer matters more than ranking below it.

Why don’t B2B brands appear in AI search results? Usually because their content gives AI nothing worth citing: no statistics, no credible sources, no standalone answers. Adding those improved AI visibility by up to 40% in the KDD 2024 study.

How do I get my brand cited in ChatGPT and other AI platforms? Google says no special technical requirements apply beyond standard search eligibility. The proven moves: verifiable statistics, cited sources, expert quotes, and direct answers to real buyer questions.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO) and how is it different from SEO? SEO optimizes for ranked lists of links; GEO optimizes for being cited inside AI answers. They overlap heavily, but GEO emphasizes citability.

How can I improve my manufacturing brand’s visibility in AI search engines? Start with a prompt audit of the questions your buyers ask, then build content answering them with spec-level accuracy, real data, and cited sources.

How do oil & gas and industrial companies get found in AI search? Same mechanics, industrial twist: longer cycles and larger committees mean early AI research shapes shortlists months before the RFQ.

How can I optimize my B2B website for AI-driven search? Keep your technical SEO foundation solid, then add what AI systems cite: sourced statistics, expert quotes, direct buyer-question answers, and structured FAQ sections.
